Mrs. Ruth Marguerite Matson, age 95, of Wyalusing, PA, (Herrick Township) passed away on Friday, October 5, 2018, at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA.
Ruth was born in Pike Township, Bradford County, PA, on April 25, 1923, a daughter of the late William Benjamin Junk and Jennie Edith Kinner Junk. She attended school in the Wyalusing area and married Clifford James Matson of Camptown on June 10, 1939. He predeceased her on May 12, 1986.
Clifford and Ruth were dairy farmers in Herrick Township (Stoney Point) for many years before retiring to their new home on a farm parcel in 1978 and passing the farm on to their son, Bill and his wife Barbara. Ruth cared for Clifford for many years before his passing as he suffered with Parkinson’s. She joined him as a school bus driver for a few years in the Camptown School District as they worked together to run a farm and raise a family.
Ruth attended church in Camptown and Herrickville and was a member of the Herrickville sewing club. She was blessed with good health and was always busy while enjoying her rural lifestyle. Ruth had a small greenhouse operation and enjoyed conversing with the people who came to buy plants. She enjoyed taking care of her various gardens and canned large amounts of fruits and vegetables and shared them with children and grandchildren.
As a child of the depression and then WWII, Ruth learned to provide for herself and her family. She sometimes provided food for the supper table by hunting small game and deer and her .22 rifle kept the woodchucks out of her gardens. Ruth was very talented with hand crafts and made many different items, which she sold at various local craft venues. She crocheted elaborate afghans and sewed beautiful quilts for all her children and grandchildren. She knitted an endless supply of hats, gloves and slippers and loved giving them to family and friends.
Ruth was a strong willed, intelligent and loving person and will be greatly missed.
