Richard Francis Schaefer

Richard Francis Schaefer, age 85, of Eagles Mere, PA, passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

Rich was born in New York City, on September 25, 1938, a son of the late Charles Frederick Schaefer and Rosemary Clare Heffernan Schaefer.  He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1956 and graduated with his BS from Queens College and received his MS from George Washington University.

He married the former Claire Elizabeth Hart on June 18, 1960, and they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last June. As a young man Rich dreamed of being a priest, a doctor, or a carpenter. Though his career path ended up being with the Federal Government, in essence he accomplished all three of those dreams. Rich was highly active in St. Basil’s parish and became a Eucharistic minister. He became a very gifted woodworker and successfully completed EMS training and volunteered for the Eagles Mere Ambulance station 51.  He touched many lives with his kindhearted nature and willingness to help anyone in need.  

Rich was a member of St. Basil’s Church and a member of the IHM Parish Finance Committee and a member of the Eagles Mere Fire and Ambulance Association.

Nine grandchildren: Sophie, Claire, Alexandra, Keira, Valerie, Jacob, Keegan, Corissa and Calleigh; and two great-grandchildren: Luke and Cason.

A grandson, Matthew R. Cwiek predeceased him.

Services will be announced in the summer.
