Mary Jane Tompkins

Mary Jane Tompkins, age 90, a lifelong resident of Wyalusing, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, November 19, 2023, at the Guthrie Memorial Skilled Nursing Unit, in Towanda, PA, surrounded with love from her pastor and friends.

Mary Jane was born July 17, 1933, in Sayre, PA, a daughter of the late Edward F. and Edith Hoover Tompkins. She graduated from Wyalusing High School, Class of 1951, and worked many years at the Wyalusing Theatre on Main Street, then at various dress factories in Dushore and Lopez before becoming one of the first employees of Wyalusing’s American Meter Plant on Riverside Drive. American Meter later was replaced by Arrow United, from which Mary Jane retired in 1995.

She was named Wyalusing’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 2006, and her memberships were many- Wyalusing United Methodist Church Trustee, United Methodist Women’s Group, Towanda Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and its Gift Shop, Wyalusing Lioness, ACS Daffodil Days worker, and Wyalusing Fireman’s Carnival worker. In addition to helping others, Mary Jane was well-known for her love of bowling, having participated in the Pennsylvania State Bowling tournaments for more than 25 years. She had an uncanny ability to sell fundraising tickets and the United Methodist Church’s famous Easter candy. Undaunted by dozens and dozens of chocolate eggs on the UMC tables, she didn’t miss many people in her quest to sell them. She also greatly enjoyed her flowers and working in her numerous flower beds around her home.

She is survived by several lifelong special friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at 11:00 AM in the Wyalusing United Methodist Church, 85 Church St., Wyalusing, PA, with the Rev. Adam Barborich, her pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Wyalusing Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church from 10:00 AM until the start of the service at 11:00 AM in the Wyalusing United Methodist Church, on Wednesday morning, November 29, 2023.
