Elizabeth “Bettyann” Goodyear, 75, of Dushore, PA, died May 8, 2020,at Muncy Valley Nursing Home. She was born April 28, 1945, in Sayre, PA, a daughter of the late Joseph J. and Elizabeth (Betty) McMahon Sick. She has been very happily married for 29 years to Abraham L. Goodyear. They married on April 27, 1991. Also married again at St. Basil’s on April 24, 2007.
Bettyann grew up on a small farm in Cherry Mills. She graduated from St. Basil’s High School in 1963. While she was a secretary for Dolly Madison, Dushore, she also worked nights, hand sewing shoes at Keystone State Shoe Factory, Mildred, PA. Next, Bettyann worked as a receptionist and secretary for Bradco Supply, Towanda. Returning to Dushore in 1970s, Bettyann became a prominent Sullivan County businesswomen. Bettyann and her children ran a small grocery store and Amoco Gas Station for over 20 years. To make up for slow business during the winter Bettyann also worked at the Sullivan County Courthouse, for ten years, as Sullivan County Auditor.
Mrs. Goodyear was hired in the 1989-90 school term, by the Sullivan County School District as an administrative secretary to the Superintendent. After she passed her probationary period, and unable to compete with the big gas companies, she closed the station in April 1990. Bettyann retired in the 2003-2004 school term.
Bettyann served as a secretary for St. Basil’s Youth CCD Program for nearly 20 years. Bettyann was secretary for St. Basil’s Alumni since 1996 and particularly enjoyed helping family researchers. Bettyann is a lifetime member of the Sullivan County Historical Soc. She also served as a secretary for the Altar Rosary Society. Bettyann was active in school activities when her children attended Sullivan County Schools hosting and organizing the P.T.G. Hoagie Fund-raiser for many years. Bettyann enjoyed working at St. Basil’s July 4th picnic several years, in later years sold 2001 History and 2004 Directory Book which she helped prepare for printing. She had also been a member of the Sullivan Co. Chamber of Commerce, the PA State Auditors Assoc., Sullivan Co. Democrat Women’s Club, and Lifetime Member of Dushore American Legion Auxiliary.
Bettyann’s greatest love, however, was her love of family and friends. Not a birthday or holiday would go by without an email card or a phone call. She recently gave each of her family her updated Family Cookbook. Bettyann enjoyed playing card games and many board games in front of the wood burning stove. Who can forget her lists or the last minute projects, like sewing her children an outfit the day before they wanted it or the wooden Barbie doll boxes with her table saw the week before Christmas. Her nicest challenge was making 6 bridesmaid dresses, the brides and her own in 3 months, mostly before opening the store each day. Bettyann had a good sense of humor and loved meeting new friends.
