Alice Hunter Weeman died at home in Eagles Mere, PA, on April 12, 2022, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Born in Elmira, NY, she graduated from the MacDuffie School and Chatham College and earned a master’s degree in teaching from Elmira College. In 1970, she married Frederick Weeman whom she met on a blind date at Dartmouth College in 1966, arranged by dear friends.
She and Freddie took jobs in San Francisco soon after their wedding. Alice worked in banking for a few years, but her true calling was as a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, a “Pro Mom” as later designated by her first son, Frederick, Jr (known as Erik), who was born in 1974. Her second son, Samuel, came along in 1975.
In 1976, Freddie’s career took the family to Elmira, NY, Alice’s birthplace and home to Alice’s parents and three of her siblings at that time. Elmira was also convenient to Eagles Mere, PA, a small lake town that Alice had visited every summer since age five. In 1980, Alice and Freddie bought a home in Eagles Mere and the family spent weekends and the summer months there.
Alice enjoyed wonderful friendships in both communities. She loved her book groups, bridge groups, and golf partners. Volunteering at the boys’ schools and leading hikes for the Eagles Mere Conservancy, Alice always found the time and energy to help.
Alice loved and nurtured her two sons, instilling in them a strong family bond, the joy of books, art and good friends, and a love of nature. She also raised a series of nine Labrador retrievers, one of which had a litter of eight puppies (Alice’s first grandchildren). Her love of nature included gardening and watching the hummingbirds that flocked to her flowers and feeders. Some of her happiest times were spent helping her kids and grandkids (Conrad, Kai, and Nina) discover the wonders of nature while walking through the Pennsylvania woods. Her love of travel and her enthusiasm for visiting and learning about places and cultures were inspiring and infectious.
Alice was a loving, accepting, and positive person, always kind to old friends and new. A great conversationalist, she had endless energy and a smile for everyone. She will be missed dearly by her family and all who knew her.
Alice is survived by her husband, Frederick Weeman of Eagles Mere, her son Erik Weeman and his wife, Dawn of Portland, OR, and her son, Sam and his wife Martha and children Conrad, Kai and Nina of Miami, FL, and her sister, Rebecca Sager of Naples, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Alice was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Florence Reed and Martha Pendleton and her brother, Philip Hunter.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Alice’s memory to the Eagles Mere Conservancy, PO Box 64, Eagles Mere, PA 17731.
A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 PM, on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at the Eagles Mere Country Club. Arrangements were under the direction of the Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA.
