William O. Albertini, 64, died suddenly Saturday, June 28, 2008 on the golf course at the Eagles Mere Country Club.
A resident of Eagles Mere, Berwyn, Pa., and Naples, Fla., Bill was born June 29, 1943, in Mount Carmel, Pa. He was the son of the late William F. and Phyllis (Newman) Albertini.
Bill graduated from Mount Carmel High School, received a BS degree from the University of Notre Dame, an MBA from Lehigh University, and an MS in Finance from MIT.
Bill retired in 1999 after a 33-year career in telecommunications with Verizon and its predecessor organizations. When he retired, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Bell Atlantic Global Wireless. From 1995 to 1997, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Bell Atlantic Corporation, and also as a Director of Bell Atlantic. At the time of his death, he was serving on the Board of Directors for BlackRock Inc., Triumph Group, Airgas, and Charming Shoppes. He was a trustee of the Weller Health Education Foundation.
He was a past president of Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., and the Eagles Mere Country Club. He was a founding member and a president of the Eagles Mere Foundation. He was also a past president of the Eagles Mere Association.
A lifelong golfer and lover of the sport, he was involved in securing the 2013 U.S. Open for Merion Golf Club. He won the men’s club championship at the Eagles Mere Country Club in 1986, 1989 and 1994.
He was an avid supporter of Notre Dame football and Philadelphia sports teams.
Bill was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Eagles Mere.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Katherine (Keliher) Albertini, originally from Williamsport, Pa.; two children, Elizabeth (Beth) Schetroma (Frank), of Muncy, Pa., and William Jr. (B.J.), of Bowling Green, Ohio; brothers Gerald, of Holden, Mass., and James, of Kurtistown, Hawaii; Aunt; Ellen Albertini Dow of Woodland Hills, CA and cousins Robert Albertini, of Hilton Head, S.C., and Carleton Strouss, of Mechanicsburg, Pa. He was preceded in death by a sister, Judith.
A celebration of Bill’s life and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at 1 p.m. at St. Basil the Great in Dushore with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, pastor, presiding. Family will receive friends at the church beginning at noon. The burial will be private.
