Obituary
Ethel Elizabeth Heistand Hollinger, age 86, of Eagles Mere, PA and formerly of Thornburg, a suburb of Pittsburgh, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2008.
Ethel was the widow of A. Sieber Hollinger of Harrisburg, formerly a partner of the law firm of Reed Smith of Pittsburgh, PA. Ethel was born in Rahway, NJ July 13, 1922 the daughter of the Rt. Rev. John Thomas Heistand, 3rd Episcopal Bishop of Harrisburg and Alta Strite Hertzler Heistand.
She along with her twin sister Suzanne Heistand Smith attended the Benjamin Franklin School in Bloomsburg for six years, while her father was rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Upon moving to Harrisburg when her father became Dean of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Ethel attended the Catherine Sweeney Day School and subsequently graduated from Hannah More Academy in Maryland.
She was a member of the Harrisburg Junior League and during the 2nd World War was a volunteer for the Civilian Defense as an ambulance driver and served with the American Red Cross Canteen.
She was married to Lt. Hollinger in 1944 and after living in several army camps, moved at the conclusion of the war to Pittsburgh where Mr. Hollinger rejoined the law firm of Reed Smith. Sieb predeceased her in August of 1991.
While in Pittsburgh Ethel served as President of the Thornburg Community Club and was also an active member of the Thornburg Village Players. In addition she volunteered to serve on several hospital boards and was a member of the Board of Managers of the Episcopal Church Home. She was a former chairman of the Church Committee of St. John-in-the-Wilderness, Eagles Mere, PA and secretary to the Eagles Mere Conservancy.
Surviving are three sons: Charles Henry Hollinger II of Merion, PA; Thomas Heistand Hollinger of Washington, CT and Andrew Sieber Hollinger of Roslindale, MA and five grandchildren, Jake, Jobey, Josh, Philip and Charles. She is also survived by her two brothers; Rt. Rev. Joseph Thomas Heistand, retired Bishop of Arizona, Richmond, VA and Hobart H. Heistand of Jackson, NH. She was predeceased by her twin sister, Suzanne Smith of Harrisburg, PA.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 6th at 2:00 P.M. at St. Johns-in-the-Wilderness Episcopal Church in Eagles Mere, PA with her niece, the Rev. Virginia Heistand-Jones, presiding.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
