OBITUARY
Derwin F. (Duke) Steimling, age 91, of Nordmont, PA passed away peacefully on Monday, March 24, 2008 at the Highlands Care Center in Laporte, PA.
Duke was born August 27, 1916 in Grier City, Schuylkill County, PA the son of the late Frederick Franklin and Margaret Elizabeth Faust Steimling. He led a full and happy life filled with family and friends and lots of sports. He was a pitcher on the Chicago Cubs farm team back in the 1930’s. He was a great golfer and played every chance he could, belonging to three country clubs, Cedarbrook, Atlantic City and Eagles Mere. People gathered around to watch him hit the ball; he had a baseball player’s swing but hit the ball a mile and was a great chipper and putter. He was also an excellent wood craftsman, making beautiful bowls, salt and pepper shakers, furniture, candlesticks and a grandfather’s clock among other items. His hands were huge, but he was able to do very fine work. He loved good food and enjoyed planting and enjoying the bounty from a huge vegetable garden. He also loved playing cards. He was a proud, faithful and loyal member of the High Noon Club of Eagles Mere which met each Monday and Friday. He was also a member of various Masonic organizations.
Duke worked for many years for the Reading Rail Road in Philadelphia. After retirement, he and his wife the former Kathryn Houseknecht Devereaux built their own home in Nordmont, which they named “Tranquility Hill.”
In addition to his wife, Kay Steimling, Duke is survived by three stepchildren, Nancy Powers, Joe Devereaux and Jim Devereaux, two daughters-in-law, Angie Devereaux and Linda Devereaux, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will all miss him. He was predeceased by one stepson, Jack Devereaux.
Funeral arrangements are private and under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA.
