Josephine was born October 4, 1919 in Bernice, Pennsylvania to Eugene and Susan Mattioli Serafini. One of eight children, Josie grew up in a very active household. She attended Bernice School and was then employed at the Weldon Pajama Factory. She was predeceased by her sister Inez Serafini and her brother Armando Serafini. On January 18, 1941, Josie married Anthony Barnatovich of Mildred. After having children, she became a devoted mother and a full-time homemaker. She was well known and respected for her ability as a knitter, seamstress and a wonderful cook. She made many beautiful afghans over the years and kept an immaculate home. Josie was also a member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. She enjoyed music very much and often entertained herself playing her accordion or listening to Italian music. Josie’s dedication to raising her family will be long remembered by her husband Anthony Barnatovich and her children Jeanne (Mike) Bilski of Wilkes-Barre, George (Vanessa) Barnatovich of Mildred, and Joe Barnatovich of Mildred. She also had much influence in the upbringing of her grandchildren Suzanne Nesmith, Lisa Elliott, Michael Bilski, John Bilski, and Joel Barnatovich. Josie is survived by her sisters Rose Gardner, Anna Decker and Anita Sysock; her brothers John Serafini and Arno Serafini; eleven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 26th at 10:00 A.M. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mildred, PA with the Rev. Bert S. Kozen, her pastor, presiding. Interment will be in the adjoining parish cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday, March 25 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home. The family will provide the flowers and request that memorials be directed to the Mildred Ambulance Association, PO Box 74, Mildred, PA 18632.
