Francis Pastusic, age 83, of Mildred, PA passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA.
Francis was born in Dushore on October 13, 1925, a son of the late Peter & Sophia Say Pastusic. He entered the US Marine Corps after attending local schools on September 28, 1943 and was sent to Camp Lejeune where he trained as a war dog handler to “Rex.” The Sullivan Review reported on December 16, 1944, that “Marine war dog Rex and his handlers Cpl. Francis Pastusic of Dushore and Pvt. First Class Arthur LeaMond of Maplewood, NJ were commended by their commanding officer for their bravery during the recent Battle of Peleliu Island. They were cited as doing a magnificent job throughout the campaign. It was noted that while they were on duty, not a Jap infiltrated through Marine Lines.” He was discharged on February 11, 1946.
Francis married the former Alberta M. Pedro of Mildred on June 29, 1963 and they recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.
Francis then worked in several mining companies. Eventually he owned and operated a mine with his two brothers, Paul & Joe. After mining he worked for Triple V Construction of Dushore for several years. He then returned to mining for his nephew until he retired.
After retiring he enjoyed mowing lawns, picking blueberries and fixing lawn mowers. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mildred, PA a member of McDermott Post #452 American Legion, Mildred, PA and the White Ash Land Association.

Numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Moyer, and five brothers: infant Peter Pastusic, Joseph Pastusic, Michael Pastusic, Stanley Pastusic and John Pastusic.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 31, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mildred, PA with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in the adjoining parish cemetery.
Graveside Military Honors will be accorded at St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery by members of the US Marine Corps Reserve and members of McDermott Post #452 American Legion, Mildred, PA.
