DEAN HOMER FUNERAL HOME 206 WATER STREET PO BOX 1 DUSHORE, PA 18614 TEL 570 928-8163 FAX 570 928-8116 Email pdh@epix.net September 17, 2008 OBITUARY Mrs. Evelyn Caroline Yonkin, age 93, of Dushore, PA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA with family at her side. A lifelong Sullivan County resident, Evelyn was born Aug. 23, 1915 in Cherry Township, a daughter of Hallie Edward and Nellie Van Horn Stahl Hottenstein. She attended the Cherry Mills School, and graduated in 1932 from Dushore High School. On Sept. 12, 1936 she married Robert J. Yonkin and together they owned and operated the Yonkin dairy farm in Cherry Township, which also produced potatoes for Wise Potato Chip Co., peas for Birds Eye Frozen Foods, and maple syrup. Evelyn also worked for three years at the Weldon Pajama Factory in Lopez and for 10 years as a long distance operator for Commonwealth Telephone until she retired at age 62. A member of the Craftsmen of the Endless Mountains, she took a Penn State Extension course to learn crafts, and after an additional course at Wyalusing, earned a certificate enabling her to judge crafts. Evelyn was renowned for her bird carvings, which were often given as gifts to visiting dignitaries. Her birds grace many, many homes throughout the U.S. and the world. Evelyn was a member of Redeemer Church of Dushore and the secretary of its Consistory for over 10 years. Surviving are sons J. Melvin (Joann) Yonkin, Towanda, PA and William R. (Emma) Yonkin, Dushore RD and daughters Carolynn Ann Yonkin Thier (Fred) Fuller, Dundee, NY and Shirley Yonkin (Steven) Garver, Skaneateles, NY. Also surviving are her brothers Leland M. (Miriam) Hottenstein, Vestal, NY and H. Chauncey Hottenstein, Dushore RD. She has 8 grandchildren: Joseph M. Yonkin Jr., Darren K. Yonkin, Lisa Marie Fenstermacher, Christopher Charles Yonkin, Karen Lorraine Husick, Michael Philip Garver, Allan Robert Garver, Andrew Nathan Garver; 4 step-grandchildren: Paul Douglas Fuller, Brian Scott (Linda) Fuller, Timothy Allen (Lisa) Fuller, Bonnie Sue Bryan; 13 great-grandchildren: Joshua J. Yonkin, Tara P. Yonkin, Caroline Marie Fenstermacher, Sarah Kay Yonkin, Brandon Scott Snyder, Megan Rose Marie Yonkin, Dillon Robert Husick, Ethan William Husick, Grace Westerdale Garver, Katherine Joy Garver, Robert Michael Garver, Lily Cleveland Garver, Gavin Clayton Garver; 6 step-great-grandchildren: Jesse Daniel Fuller, Kristen Eileen Fuller, Katelyn Nicole Bryan, Lauren Rae Ellingwood, Anthony Donald Fuller, Cynthia Nicole Fuller, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Robert on May 27, 1997; an infant sister Anna Elvina Hottenstein in 1917; sister Nettie Doris Yonkin on March 15, 2005; a sister-in-law Marjorie Austin Hottenstein on June 22, 2003; and Lawrence George Adam Thier on January 5, 1985 and an infant step great granddaughter, Valery Lynn Fuller. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 20th, 2008 at 12:00 Noon at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water Street, Dushore, PA, with the Rev. Darcy Miller presiding. Burial will be in Peace Cemetery, Cherry Township. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Sept. 19th from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. and an hour before the service on Saturday.
