OBITUARY
Paul E. Walters, 69, of Towanda, PA died Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at, the Bradford County Manor, Burlington, PA.
He was born in Scranton, PA on February 14, 1939, a son of the late Lewis and Julia Sweeney Walters. He attended St. Basil’s High School and entered the US Marine Corps in 1959 and served until 1963. After the service, he worked for most of his career at GTE Sylvania, in Towanda, PA and also delivered the Daily Review Newspaper for over 15 years. He worked for a short time for Kelly Services at the Charmin Paper Products Co. in Mehoopany.
Paul was a member St. Basil’s Church, Dushore and a former member of the Dushore American Legion Post #996, and the VFW as well. He came to Dushore after Little League and played with Dushore in what was known as Pony League (age 13-16). He was by far the best pitching talent of his time. Dushore won the Championship in the last year of Pony League and Paul was a major factor, not only with his pitching talent, but also his hitting. He could smash the ball, no doubt. He stated that he always wanted to pitch because then he could walk on and off the field and not have to run. And then there was the game where he swung at a pitch and was so far out in front of it, he hit himself in the forehead with the ball. Not once, but twice in the same game. No one could recall ever have seen this happen to anyone, not even once. Paul was a "pull hitter" and he would hit some awesome long balls, and hard! He also played on the Championship teams at St. Basil's. His name is on some of the trophies still on display at the school. (Info furnished by Gerard Coyle). He as an avid NASCAR fan and attended many races with his friends to watch his favorite driver Dale Earnhardt. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
