Obituary
Mrs. Adella Sitas Stevens, age 92, of Wyalusing, PA passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Memorial Hospital, Towanda, PA.
Adella was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA on Nov 5, 1916 the eldest of nine children of the late William and Marcella Romaskicz Sitas. After working for several years in the Wilkes-Barre coal mines her father moved the family to Laceyville, PA. At the age of six, Adella went to the one room school on Clapper Hill and her teacher was Mr. Glenn Bennett. She worked at Michael’s Hotel in order to attend High School and graduated from the Laceyville High School a member of the Class of 1936. After graduation she worked at Sterling’s Restaurant and Palmer’s Hardware Store in Wyalusing.
In 1942, Adella married Robert Neiley Stevens. They moved to Elmira, NY where she worked at the Eclipse Manufacturing Plant. Later, during the war Bob and Adella were employed at the Horseheads Army Depot where army equipment for the troops was distributed by rail. Bob was a crane operator and Adella a warehouse checker.
After the war, Adella and Bob moved back to Wyalusing and purchased the Hotel Middendorf. After doing extensive renovation they developed a very successful hotel/restaurant business. In 1952, they bought a house at 101 Second Street, Wyalusing that served as the family home for 50 years. Adella worked at the American Meter Company for nineteen years and nineteen years for Arrow United until her retirement in 1986.
Adella was a member of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church; Wyalusing Grange #265; Sheet Metal Union #550, Wyalusing Senior Citizen’s Club and the Wyalusing Chamber of Commerce. She was a very active bowler for many years. Her delights were tending her flower bed, vegetable garden and asparagus and red raspberry patch. She was famous for her homemade raspberry jam which she loved sharing with family and friends.

Six step-grandchildren and 10 step great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Karen Bundle on May 23, 2009 and her step-son, Robert E. Stevens on April 23, 2009; two sisters, Vera Champluvier and Deleora Kinney; two brothers: William Sitas and Joseph Sitas; sister-in-law: Beatrice Sitas and step-daughter Jean Cochran.
A Transferal Service will be held on Saturday morning, Oct. 3rd 2009 at 10:00 A.M. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, PA and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary’s Church, Wyalusing with the Rev. Joseph J. Manarchuck, her pastor, presiding. Interment will be in the Wyalusing Cemetery. A dinner will be at the St. Mary’s Hall immediately following; all are invited to attend.
Friends may call on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009 evening from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M.
The family will provide the flowers and ask that Memorial Contributions be directed to St. Mary’s Church, RR 4 Box 4003, Wyalusing, PA 18853.
