Joseph J. Calaman of Amherst, a retired chemical engineer, died Tuesday after he was hit by a car while crossing Transit Road in East Amherst. He was 88.
Born in Mildred, PA, on July 14, 1921 one of fifteen children of the late Bernard and Antoinette Columbo Calaman, he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Bucknell University in 1943 and went to work for Union Carbide/ Linde Air Products Division in Aurora, Minn., and subsequently was transferred to the Buffalo area.
Mr. Calaman spent most of his career working on the Iron Range in Minnesota, held several patents on fuel combustion technology and authored a paper related to drilling and excavation technology. Mr. Calaman was well very known for the rock cutting “Jet Piercing” process he helped to develop. He retired in 1986.
He was a devoted parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, a member of its Holy Name Society and senior citizens group, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Calaman also was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and had served as a director of its Western New York Chapter. He was very active in maintaining the Union Carbide/Linde Museum at local Praxair Headquarters.
He was a recipient of the Williamsville Lions Club’s “Man of the Year” award and received many other awards for his volunteerism in the community.
He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
His wife, Doris A. Harris Calaman, died in 1995. Mr. Calaman was predeceased by 14 siblings: Frank D. Calaman of Mildred, PA, Anna Martinelli of Austin, TX, Josephine Bianchi of Mildred, PA, Anthony Calaman of Oswego, NY, Vincent Calaman of Cleveland, OH, Eugene Calaman of Mildred, PA, Madeline Basci of Berwick, PA, Margaret Cenciarini of Caldwell, NJ, Roy Calaman of Mildred, PA, Rose Arenda of Mildred, PA, Dominic Calaman and Victor Calaman of Martinsville, VA, John Calaman of Towanda, PA and Mary A. Calaman of Mildred, PA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a. m. on Saturday, Oct 3rd at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mildred, PA with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Amherst Meals on Wheels, 370 John James Audobon Parkway, Amherst, NY 14228-1142. Joseph delivered Meals on Wheels every Friday for the last 20 years.
