Sister Ellen Mullen, I.H.M., of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Thursday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. Sister Ellen was formerly known as Sister Mary Fides.
Born June 20, 1940, in Peckville, she was the daughter of the late Charles J. and Kathleen Dean Mullen. She entered the IHM Congregation Sept. 8, 1959. She made her temporary profession of vows June 27, 1962, and her final profession of vows June 27, 1967.
Sister Ellen taught junior high grades in the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School, White Haven, from 1964 to 1965; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School, Bellefonte, from 1965 to 1973; St. Ann Elementary School, Nyack, N.Y., from 1973 to 1975; and St. Matthew Elementary School, Wilmington, Del., from 1977 to 1980.
Sister Ellen also taught religious subjects at Bishop Hannan High School in Scranton from 1986 to 1988 and at Holy Cross High School, Delran, N.J., from 1988 to 1989.
She was a pastoral minister at St. Ambrose Parish, Bridgeport, Conn., from 1985 to 1986 and at St. Ann's Parish, Scranton, from 1989 to 1992. She was the coordinator of interparochial ministry at St. Basil Parish, Dushore, for the Bradford Sullivan Deanery from 1992 to 1994. She also served as pastoral assistant at Most Holy Rosary Parish, Syracuse, N.Y., from 1994 to 2000.
From 2004 until her death, Sister Ellen served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent and Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.
She received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science, both in education, from Marywood University.
Surviving are two brothers, Thomas, Easton; and Robert, Scotch Plains, N.J.; a sister, Sister Carolyn Mullen, I.H.M., Delran, N.J.; nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by five brothers, William J., Donald G., Dean, James and Charles; and two sisters, Mary Lou Faliskie and Kathleen Toolan.
The funeral was Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Residence, 2300 Adams Ave., Scranton.
