(Bill) Mulrooney, age 81, of Laporte, PA passed away on Monday, August 10, 2009 at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA of injuries sustained following an automobile accident. Bill was born February 28, 1928 in Wilmington, DE a son of the late Michael Francis & Mildred Lutz Mulrooney. He graduated from Haverford High School, Havertown, PA in 1946 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a certified radar mechanic. This set the path for his remarkable career and accomplishments. After being discharged from the Air Corp he went on to enlist in the Air Force of the United States serving until 1952. He attended Carnegie Institute of Technology where he was later recruited by RCA. His career as an engineer for RCA spanned 38 years, beginning as a television technician and advancing through radar and tracking systems, unmanned missiles, satellite systems and work for NASA, the Air Force and private airlines. Bill eventually moved to the RCA Astro Electronics division in Princeton, NJ where his greatest pride was working on the communication systems for the Apollo moon landing mission. He was a devoted company man who received numerous accolades for his accomplishments. The “Space program” was a passion for Bill, who was part of it from the beginning. He loved to watch the shuttle launches after he retired while spending some winter months near Cape Canaveral. Bill married the former Helen Louise (Tomi) Thompson of Forty Fort, PA on July 29, 1950. She predeceased him on August 11, 1994 after 44 years of marriage. Bill was a devoted family man and was known lovingly to be a “hard-headed Irishman” to those who knew him. He was a great Dad and a wonderful Pappy and will be greatly missed. Bill was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Laporte, PA. Surviving: Two daughters: Maureen Gallagher of Morrisville, PA and Lynda Kott of Yardley, PA; Five grandchildren, Sean and Ryan Gallagher of Morrisville, PA and Stephen, Brendan and Lindsay Kott of Yardley, PA; a great granddaughter, Hailie Gallagher of Morrisville, PA. Bill was predeceased by a brother, Patrick F. Mulrooney. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, his pastor, presiding. The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Laporte Ambulance Association, or to the Laporte Fire Company, PO Box 31, Laporte, PA 18626 or the Lake Mokoma Conservancy, PO Box 220, Laporte, PA 18626.
