Peg was born September 13, 1933 in Towanda, the daughter of the late Harold “Puss” and Lillian Wall Mann. Peg was a lifelong citizen of Wyalusing. She was a graduate of Wyalusing High School in addition to graduating first in her class from the Wyoming Seminary Dean’s School of Business where she held the highest mark in math for over 10 years. She was married to Fred Shaffer on February 27, 1953. Together, Fred and Peg raised four daughters and were successful dairy farmers in Taylorville for over 40 years. Peg expressed her love for Wyalusing by being involved. In the early years, she worked for her parents at Mann’s Restaurant , the Wyalusing Theatre and Mann’s drugstore and local tax agency. Prior to retirement, she loved working for the Wyalusing Boro as a Secretary where she was instrumental in accounting for the Wyalusing UDAG grant. She has spent countless hours computerizing records of all those resting in the Wyalusing cemetery. She recently retired from 29 years as the local Registrar for the PA Department of Vital Statistics. She was a Red Cross volunteer manning the phone lines on designated days during the month. She was a supporter of the Wyalusing Museum and Library. She was an active member of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church. Peg and Fred were known for their hospitality, entertaining many friends and family over the years. A very generous person, she was also known for her quick wit. Surviving are four daughters, Anne Gamble of Wyalusing, Meg (Jack) Moodley of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Barbara (George) Hugo of Camptown and Jennifer Shaffer of Sayre. She leaves eleven beloved grandchildren: Jesse and Fred Newhart, Stephanie Gamble (Jim) MacDonald, Sean Gamble, Jon, Elizabeth and Paul Hugo and Stacy, Rachel, Adam and Ashley Matson. Four beautiful great grandchildren, Aiden and Isaac Newhart and Jonathan and Jocelyn MacDonald loved their Gram. Peg is also survived by her sister and brother in law, Caryl and Bill Snyder of Wyalusing. Her husband, Fred, predeceased her in July 23, 1991. Friends may call at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane in Wyalusing on Monday, March 30th from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. Services will be held on Tuesday, March 31st at 11:00 AM at the Homer Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry Ballard of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church, officiating. A burial service will be held at the Wyalusing Cemetery. The family suggests the Wyalusing Community Corp, for the building project, (WCC, PO Box 813, Wyalusing, PA 18853) as an appropriate memorial for their mother. Peg was particularly interested in and proud of the work done by the Wyalusing Community Corp and felt the community building was a wonderful place for gatherings and furthering the preservation of the heritage of Wyalusing.
