Sowden, age 79, of Wilmot Township, well known area resident, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2008 at Stonehedge Farm, his home with his loving family at his side. Al was born February 7, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA a son of the late Albert J. and Marie M. Engard Sowden Sr. He graduated from High School in Philadelphia and married the former Irene T. Jakubowski of Hanover Green on May 29, 1948. He met Irene at a dance while she was attending the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing. Al was a general contractor in the Philadelphia area for many years, moving to Wilmot in 1970. He continued as a contractor in the Bradford Sullivan County area until he became the claims supervisor for Tuscarora Wayne Mutual Insurance Company in 1979. He retired from T-W Ins in 1997 and continued with them as a consultant for the building and grounds until his death. Al was a very active member of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Wyalusing, PA. He was also very active with many civic organizations in the Wyalusing area and would help out at Christmas time portraying Santa Claus at many events over many years. He was also a member of the Eagles Mere Country Club. Sowden Stroudsburg, PA Sisters: Mrs. Ann Scire Long Island, NY Sister-in-law: Helen Reh Wilkes-Barre, PA Grandchildren: James Sowden Austin, TX Janel Sowden Manhattan, NY Numerous nieces and nephews, he was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Sowden in July of 1981 and brother, Paul and sisters, Adelaide Willey and Jean McCourt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA with the Rev. Philip S. Rayappan, his former pastor, presiding and Rev. Joseph J. Manarchuck, Pastor of St. Mary’s Church; Rev. Patrick J. McLaughlin, Pastor of Christ the King Church, Blakeslee and the Rev. Patrick S. Cortese, retired con-celebrating. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday morning at the church from 9:00 A.M. until the time of the service. As it is Holy Week the church cannot accept flowers and the family request that memorials be directed to St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church, RR 4 Box 4003, Wyalusing, PA 18853 or the Wyalusing Public Library, PO Box 98, Wyalusing, PA 18853.
