P. DEAN HOMER FUNERAL HOME 206 WATER STREET PO BOX 1 DUSHORE, PA 18614 TEL 570 928-8163 FAX 570 928-8116 Email pdh@epix.net OBITUARY Fred Port Meyer, age 69, of Eagles Mere, PA passed away on Wednesday, May 20th, 2009 at the Highlands Care Center, Laporte, PA with his loving family at his side. Fred was born July 31, 1939 in West Chester, PA a son of Mary Port Meyer and the late O. Jackson Meyer. He was a graduate of Westfield High School (Westfield, NJ), class of 1957 and Penn State University in 1961 with a B.S. Degree in Dairy Science. He married the former Gail Macgill of Westfield, NJ on December 16, 1961. Fred’s career was in the food ingredient industry where he was a successful salesman. His first job was with Abbotts Dairy in Philadelphia followed by Kelco/Merck and then as national sales manager for Ralston Purina’s Protein Division. He later owned and operated a Management Recruiters International franchise in Bethlehem, PA where he successfully placed numerous professionals in careers in the food industry. In 2004, Fred sold his business and retired to Eagles Mere, PA where he had a summer residence since 1977. Fred had many pastimes including a lifelong love of cars. He once said his favorite room in the house was his garage. He owned many varieties of cars, including some head-turning sports cars, which he thoroughly enjoyed driving. He was a devoted Penn-Stater, and loved attending Penn State football games (for which he was a season ticket holder for almost 45 years). Fred enjoyed going to the family farm in Clarion, PA (where he spent his summers while growing up), trips to the New Jersey shore and fishing, and naming the year and model number of every Farmall tractor he saw. Those of us who knew and loved Fred will always remember his unfailing sense of humor and his ability to make the mundane into something special. Fred found the humor in everything including his physical limitations brought on by strokes. His greatest gift to all of us was showing us that even if life doesn’t work out quite the way you expect, to keep your sense of humor and try not to complain. Laughter truly is the best medicine. Fred resided in Doylestown, PA for most of his working career and was a member of the Doylestown Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Institute of Food Technologists, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity of Penn State, for which he served as President, and the Masonic Lodge #51 in Philadelphia, PA. In Sullivan County, he was active with the Senior Citizens at Sullivan Terrace in Dushore, PA. One of his proudest moments recently was the installation of an honorary plaque in the Berkey Creamery at Penn State commemorating his involvement in the Penn State Food Science Department.
