Laura was born on the family farm on Grant Hill, Wilmot Township on March 30, 1935 a daughter of the late Arthur & Hazel Tuttle Ely. She attended Grant Hill School and graduated from the Wyalusing High School. She married William Sobonski who predeceased her. Laura began working at the Bendix Plant in Montrose and after a lay-off, went to the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Mfg. Co. of Mildred, PA. She later returned to Bendix from which she retired after 33 years of service. After retirement Laura began her second career as a water dowser. She used her God given talent throughout eastern Pennsylvania, finding water for many people. An accomplished dowser, she was inducted into the Water Dowser’s Hall of Fame. She also enjoyed fishing and riding her motorcycles. She owned three BMW cycles, a 1951, and a ‘53 & ‘63 that had sidecars attached. She was a member of the Hollenback United Methodist Church. Surviving: Son: Joseph Ely Sugar Run, PA Step-son: Thomas Sobonski Friendsville, PA Step-daughter Judy Sobonski Kirkwood, NY Brother and sister-in-law: Carl & Marlene Ely Clay, NY Sisters and brother-in-law: Harriet Girven Sugar Run, PA Carleen & Peter Fitzgerald Sugar Run, PA Special friends: Gwen and Glenn Purdy Tunkhannock, PA and many other friends too numerous to mention and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Harry Ely in 1999 and Donald Ely in 2001 and a sister, Emogene Adams in 2004. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, PA with the Rev. Diane E. Prentice, pastor, presiding. Interment will be in the Wyalusing Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday, Sept. 24, 2007 at the funeral home from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. and on Tuesday from 12:00 Noon until the time of the service.
