Whitey was born in Canton, PA on May 25, 1909 the son of the late Walter E. & Irene M. Riley Lyon. He grew up on Thomas Ave., West Philadelphia and graduated from the West Philadelphia High School, where he played football with coach Hal Forgy, who became a chaplain in the Navy and coined the term, “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.” He later graduated from the Wharton School of Business. He married, his wife Esther of Canton, PA, on July 11, 1934; she predeceased him on January 7, 2002 after 67 years of marriage. During WWII, Whitey served two years in the US Coast Guard and three years in the US Navy. Whitey worked for the Prudential Insurance Company in Philadelphia and Upper Darby for 38 years, retiring to Eagles Mere in 1970. His father purchased “Vista Villa” their cottage in Eagles Mere in 1938 and retired from Prudential Ins. in 1942 with 35 years of service. He was a member of the Eagles Mere Community Church, VFW Post 14000, Sonestown American Legion Post #601 and a 32nd Degree Mason of Muncy Lodge No. 299, F. & A.M. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Raymond M. & Florence M. Lyon of Eagles Mere, five grand-children and many great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to the Eagles Mere Community Church, c/o Elaine Mudrick, PO Box 305, Eagles Mere, PA 17731-0305 or the Eagles Mere Ambulance Association, PO Box 374, Eagles Mere, PA 17731-0374. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at 11:30 A.M. at the Eagles Mere Community Church, with the Rev. John H. Clark, officiating. Interment will be in the Eagles Mere Cemetery.
