Philip F. Snyder
Philip F. Snyder, age 89, of Laporte, PA, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, December 4, 2010.
Philip was born in Mifflinburg, PA on September 5, 1921, the son of the late Charles M & Flora Mae Fessenden Snyder. He graduated from Mifflinburg High School class of 1939.
He was a PFC in the US Army, (1943 – 1946) serving in the 97th Division, 386 Regular Infantry in the European Theater Operation in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia, and occupation duty in Japan.
He received the following medals: American Campaign, Good Conduct, European Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, World War II Victory, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and the Bronze Star.
He received both his BS in 1951 and a MA in Industrial Arts in 1955 from Colorado State University. He taught in the public school of Windsor, CO and the Sullivan County School District for 30 years.
He was a member of the Laporte Borough Council for 37 years and is a charter member of the Sullivan County Planning Commission. He is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Welding Society, Free and Accepted Masons #370 and the Laporte United Methodist Church.
He was married to Jean Clair Sidler of Danville on October 26th, 1946 and they were happily married for 58 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Barbara S. Freeland and her husband Gary of Mesa, AZ; two sons: Eric S. Snyder and wife Susan of VA Beach, VA; Kurt M. Snyder and wife Erica of Roann, IN; and 6 grandchildren: Meghan, Mark, Laura, Stephen, Avery Lynn and Asia Rae. Philip was predeceased by a grandson, Jonathan Snyder in 1996, his wife Jean in 2005, his brother, Charles M. Snyder, Jr. of Mifflinburg, PA and two sisters, Margaret Stevens of Mifflinburg and Mary Davies of El Paso, TX.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Laporte United Methodist Church at 11AM on Saturday, December 11, 2010. Interment will be in the family plot in Mifflinburg.
The family will provide the flowers and request that donations be made to the Laporte United Methodist Church Organ Fund, Laporte, PA 18626, or the Laporte Fire Company, PO Box 31, Laporte, PA 18626.
