OBITUARY
James Harry Whitmoyer, 76, of Eagles Mere and Malvern, Pennsylvania died of cancer on Friday, September 1, 2006 at his home in Eagles Mere where he had vacationed for over 50 years.
He lived with his father, Harry Lance Whitmoyer and mother Martha Jane Rabe in Narberth, PA where he attended Lower Merion High School and Episcopal Academy.
He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1953 where he was a member of the Phi Gamma fraternity. While at Penn he competed on their varsity baseball, squash and tennis teams, and became captain of the squash and tennis teams.
After graduation he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the US Army Medical Service Corps and served for two years. During his service he married Gertrude (Trudy) Hastings of Harrisburg, PA.
He worked for the University of Pennsylvania for 39 years. He was a part of the Athletic Department and the Office of Development in Philadelphia. From 1969 – 1979 he was the Director of the University’s New York City Office.
After college he continued to play squash and tennis on a nationally competitive level. In the early 60’s he was National Squash Doubles Champion with Howard A. Davis.
Upon retirement in 1995 he volunteered as an EMT with the Malvern and Eagles Mere Fire/Ambulance Departments. He was also active with the Conservancy and St. John’s-in-the-Wilderness Episcopal Church both in Eagles Mere. He participated in many local organizations and activities and especially enjoyed working on the Eagles Mere toboggan slide.
He was known as a dedicated family man and devoted husband. In addition to his wife, Trudy, he is survived by his daughter, Lynn Lucas of Ossining, NY and son, James Jr. of Newtown, PA and 3 grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel and John Lucas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to either the University of Pennsylvania’s Weightman Discretionary Fund in Athletics, (Weightman Hall, 235 S. 33rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6322 tel. 215-898-4717), or to the Eagles Mere Volunteer Ambulance Association (PO Box 374, Eagles Mere, PA 17731), or to St. John’s-in-the-Wilderness Episcopal Church (PO Box 266, Eagles Mere, PA 17731).
A Memorial Service will be held at St. John’s-in-the-Wilderness Episcopal Church, Jones Ave., Eagles Mere, PA on Sat. Sept. 9th at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome to join the family for a reception at the Lucas’s cottage at the corner of Mary Ave. and Allegheny Ave. following the service.
