OBITUARY
Evelyn Pawlak, age 90, of 59 Front Street, New Albany, PA passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 5, 2006 at the Memorial Hospital, Towanda, PA.
Evelyn was born in Scranton, PA on March 25, 1916 the daughter of the late Edward Lowell & Lula Heiber Sturdevant. She married William J. Pawlak of Lopez, in 1937, they celebrated their 69 wedding anniversary this past January.
Evelyn was a unique individual who owned one of the very few franchise bus lines to operate in Bradford, Sullivan and Lycoming Counties. In 1929 her father Edward was granted a license by the Pennsylvania P.U.C. to operate a transportation service (Sturdevant Bus Line) linking Towanda, New Albany, Dushore and Williamsport. During WWII Evelyn was trained and became a driver with a second vehicle to meet the demand created by the war. He father passed away in 1944 and the franchise was transferred to Evelyn and her husband Bill Pawlak. After the war they purchased a 29-passenger coach and made two trips daily to Williamsport for a ten year period. As more people purchased their own vehicles, they scaled back to a one trip a day. Evelyn and Bill kept this schedule until 1999, providing transportation and freight from the Towanda-Williamsport franchise. In the 56 years of driving, Evelyn made countless friends and couriered the Williamsport Sun Gazette to Muncy Valley, Laporte, Dushore, New Albany and Towanda.
Evelyn was a member of the New Albany Baptist Church for 74 years.
