Obituary
Matthew T. Gibbs of Eagles Mere, PA and Siesta Key, FL died in his sleep on May 24, 2010. Mr. Gibbs, age 73, was the son of Matthew Gibbs of Hull, England and Madeline C. Dempsey Gibbs of Williamsport, PA. He is survived by his wife, Marlene D. Swartz, his son, Matthew T. (Kathy) Gibbs II of Monterey, CA and his daughter, Margaret Gibbs (Kevin) Richardson of Beverly, MA and four grandchildren: Kiley, Matthew III, Ellie and Zack. He was predeceased by an infant brother Edward L. Gibbs.
Mr. Gibbs was a Sun-Gazette “paper boy” for four years in his youth. He graduated from St. Joseph’s High School, Lycoming College and the U.S. Army Personnel School. Mr. Gibbs officiated baseball, basketball and football and was very proud of his days at the Original Little League and its founder, Carl E. Stoltz. He worked on several fund raising drives including the Lycoming United Fund, the Heart Fund and many others.
In September, 1966, Mr. Gibbs purchased the Secules Pontiac dealership and shortly added Buick Motor Division to be known as: Gibbs Pontiac-Buick. Mr. Gibbs operated the dealership for 33 years before retiring in 1999. He loved his customers through the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 16, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. at St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, Eagles Mere, PA with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, pastor, presiding.
