Obituary
Mr. Stanley Robert Holland, age 92 of Nellysford, VA and Eagles Mere, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at the Augusta Health Center, Fisherville, VA after a very short illness.
Stan was born, December 25, 1917 in Shrewsbury, MA son of the late Arthur Witt and Winnie Bell Morey Holland. After High School, Stan graduated from the University of Maine in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at college he was the president of his fraternity Sigma Chi. Stan entered the Army Air Corps as an officer on April 1, 1941. Stan served three years in Air Corps in the Southwest Pacific during WWII and was discharged on January 31, 1946 as a Captain and also was awarded a purple heart. He married the former Janet Miriam Fisher of Ft. Wayne, IN on September 13, 1941 Janet predeceased him on October 20, 2008 after 67 years of marriage.
They moved to Oreland, PA in 1947 where Stan was employed in Glenside as an professional engineer with ITT and Tetronics.
In 1961, Stan and Janet built their home in Eagles Mere where the spent virtually every summer where they were both avid golfers.
In 1964, Stan was transferred to Manhasset, Long Island and worked for Thompson Industries before starting his own manufacturer's rep. business called Holland and Company whose sales line was ball bushings and ball bearings.
In retirement they moved to Diamondhead, MS where they spent their winters and summered in Eagles Mere. He and Janet loved to travel. They lost their home in Diamondhead due to hurricane Katrina in 2005 and moved to Nellysford, VA (Rhodes Farm at Wintergreen Resort) where their oldest daughter Susan has a small horse farm nearby and their grandson Todd lives within a stone’s throw.
Stan lived an active life after Janet’s death in 2008 he attended weekly men’s luncheons and was a member of the Rockfish Presbyterian Church. He loved meeting new people and was well known in his local community. He constantly challenged his mind. He always had an atlas and dictionary within reach. In 2008 he took a week’s cruise with his daughter Molly to Nova Scotia. He spent a week with Ted in Los Angeles, California, another week in New Orleans with Molly. There he was able to view the remnants of the devastation of Katrina.
Stan loved his home at Rhodes Farm and said he got a thrill as he drove down his road to see the beautiful expanse of Crawford Mountain in the Blue Ridge.
He was very fortunate to be able to have his caregiver Maureen Walsh live with him to keep him company and help him "remember" his appointments. He also loved Eagles Mere and still maintained his social membership to the Eagles Mere Country Club and was able to spend five weeks at his home last summer.
