OBITUARY
Bernard William Walsh, age 91, well known former Sullivan County Commissioner, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2006 at the Highlands Care Center in Laporte, PA.
Bernie was born May 27, 1914 in Murraytown, PA a son of the late James and Evelena Bonci Walsh. In 1920, he went to work in the Murraytown mines as a breaker boy and later worked on the shaker chutes. He graduated from the three year Lopez High School in 1931 and from Dushore High School in 1932. Following graduation, he took a business course at St. Basil’s. For a short time he worked at Elmira Bridge and for the state as an equipment clerk.
Bernie went to work at Fitzpatrick & Connelly in 1945. He was there when it became Fitzpatrick & Lambert, and retired in 1978. He served on the Cherry Township election board as judge of election. He also served as Sullivan County Commissioner from 1960-1968 and 1972-1976. He also served on the Sullivan County Board of Elections during his terms as commissioner. Bernie later served with other retired commissioners supervising the election process when the commissioners’ office was on the ballot. He joined the Dushore Fire Company in 1958 and served as fire police captain for many years and began driving the ambulance in 1978. Bernie drove the ambulance for many years and continued through his retirement years, almost on a daily basis, until his 90th birthday. Bernie became a member of the Sullivan County Board of Assistance in 1998 and retired from that post earlier this year.
He was an active member of St. Basil’s Church and belonged to the former Holy Name Society. He and his family have baked beans for the St. Basil’s and St. Francis (Overton) Picnics for over thirty years.
On June 26, 1943, he married Rosemary Gainer of Dushore. They are the parents of four children: Mary Lou Meehan, Wyalusing, Jim Walsh, Dushore, Eileen Walsh, Denver, Co. and Peggy (Bill) Black, Laporte. They have six grandchildren and two great-grandsons; a sister, Martina Cavanaugh of Concord, NC, formerly of Elmira Heights, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Joseph Walsh, Lewis Walsh, Mark Walsh and, James Walsh.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA with the Rev. Bert S. Kozen, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Homer Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. There will be a Vigil Service on Wednesday, at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family will provide the flowers and request that Memorials Contributions are directed to the Dushore Fire Company Ambulance Association, PO Box 1, Dushore, PA 18614 or to St. Basil’s Church Debt Reduction fund, PO Box 307, Dushore, PA 18614.
The very largely attended funeral of Bernard W. Walsh of Dushore, PA was held on Thursday, January 26, 2006 from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA and was followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Basil’s Church, with the Rev. Bert S. Kozen, his pastor, presiding. Interment was in St. Basil’s Cemetery.
The Dushore Fire and Ambulance Association provided an official escort and Bernie’s body was transported by the Dushore Ambulance to the church and cemetery.
