Blevins, age 84, of Wyalusing, PA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at his home, with his loving family at his side. Jim was born in Sparta, KY, on October 11, 1925 son of the late John & Reba Craig Blevins. He attended grade school in Aurora, IN. At the age of 16 Jim volunteered to serve as a gunner’s mate in the Armed Guard branch of the US Navy during WWII in the European and Pacific Theatres. He was awarded the good conduct medal, the WWII victory medal, American Area Medal, the European -African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, as well as combat related ribbons and letters of commendation. One such commendation for courage under fire, having singlehandedly shot down 3 German planes during an attack on his ship. After the war Jim continued his education and graduated from the Brooklyn Academy. Jim married the former Elena Rubino of Brooklyn, NY on June 9, 1946. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last June. After the war Jim worked for US Postal Service from which he retired in 1985. He and Elena retired to Terry Township in 1993. Jim was a member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church in Wyalusing, PA. He was an avid cinematographer, and will be known for his famous home movies. He enjoyed history, doing puzzles, and traveling. He was a hard worker. He loved his family dearly, especially his wife Elena, who was the love of his life. Surviving: Spouse; Elena at home Son and daughter-in-law: John & Jeanne Blevins Mastic Beach, NY Daughters and son-in-law: Marylee Blevins Mastic Beach, NY Reba & Gene Middleton Mastic Beach, NY Seven grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, his special niece, Ginger Sperlazzo, and a nephew, Richard Sperlazzo. He was predeceased by a brother Charles Blevins in 1993. A Transferal Service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010 at 1:30 P.M. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, PA followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 P.M. at St. Mary's Church, Wyalusing, PA with the Rev. Joseph J. Manarchuck, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Moriches, NY at the convenience of the family. Friends may call on Friday, Jan. 29th at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
