Lucille A. Sick, age 98, well-known First Lady of Dushore PA, passed away on Tuesday January 31, 2017 with family at her side. Lucy was born in Dushore on January 3, 1919, the daughter of Scott and Zeta Merkel. She graduated from Dushore Public High School in 1937. Following graduation from Elmira Business School she worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Highways, in Laporte, for nearly a decade. Lucy married Bill Sick on January 17, 1949 and joined Bill in running of the Ben Franklin Store in Dushore. Later Bill and Lucy’s partnership expanded to include the Ben Franklin Store in Mansfield, the Fabricana Store and the Card & Gift Shop in Mansfield and the Card and Gift Shop in Towanda. Lucy was always involved in Dushore and the surrounding communities. In 1968 Bill and Lucy opened their pool to the community so local children could learn to swim. Lucy continued the tradition for 50 years, including this past summer. Hundreds of Sullivan County children learned to swim in that pool. She participated with Bill in the Bow Hunters Festival running the souvenir stand for the benefit of many charities and organizations in Sullivan County. Lucy was a member of St Basil’s Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. Lucy was a long time member of the Dushore Music Club. She loved to help organize the social meetings of the club, including this year when she baked hundreds of cookies for the Dushore Christmas program. She was a member of the Laporte Women’s Club particularly enjoying the annual Christmas Victorian Teas and the August Victim Services Tea. She was a member of Eagles Mere Country Club. Hard facts don’t tell the real story. Lucy was well known for her love of family, baking of chocolate cakes for every occasion, and her always-present smile. She loved being with friends and a favorite time was having coffee at the Jolly Trolley. She had travelled the world and enjoyed the warmth of Florida in the winter.
