Phoebe A. Kelley, age 101, of Dushore, PA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, at the Highlands Care Center in Laporte, PA. Phoebe was born on February 16, 1914, in Cherry Township a daughter of the late William H. & Addie Heiber Kelley. She graduated from the Dushore High School, a member of the class of 1931. Shortly after high school, Phoebe began working for the Dushore Silk Mills from 1933 to 1950. In 1950 she went to Towanda and worked in the silk mill located there for the next five years. In 1956, she began her career at the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Mfg. Factory in Mildred, where she worked until retiring in 1979. Phoebe was a loving, kind and caring citizen of Dushore. In 1971 Phoebe, Donna Donovan and Alice Taylor set up the Sullivan County Loan Closet, which supplied cancer patients’ supplies, wheelchairs, hospital beds, crutches, etc. for needy recipients, all at no cost. The funds to purchase all the equipment and supplies were raised by the ladies and endless other volunteers by running rummage sales. The sales were preceded by many hours of sorting and sizing by all the ladies. The three ladies retired from the Loan Closet in 1999 and it is still operating today with volunteer help. Phoebe enjoyed traveling to different states, like Florida and Maine and also enjoyed taking her nieces, Ann Marie Sick, Kathleen Christini, and Jane Young and nephews, John Kelley and Raymond Kelley to historical locations like Gettysburg and Valley Forge. She was also a prolific baker and made wonderful Christmas cookies and had a fondness for cats. She had a 101st birthday party while she was a resident of the Highlands. Phoebe was a life-long member of Zion Chapel, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Dushore, PA and a member of the Altar Guild. Surviving: Three nieces: Ann Marie (Edwin) Sick, Dushore, PA Kathleen (Theodore) Christini, Dushore, PA Jane Young, Dushore, PA Two nephews: Raymond (Pauline) Kelley, Dushore, PA John “Tim” (Linda) Kelley, East Smithfield, PA 13 great nieces and nephews and 10 great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother: Benjamin Kelley on February 14, 1961, and a sister: Mrs. I. Rachel Touschner on January 31, 1986, and a niece Patricia A. Alpaugh Kelley on March 31, 2007. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 6th, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA with the Rev. Phyllis A. Pelletier, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Dushore, PA Friends may call at the Homer Funeral Home on Saturday morning from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service.
