Mr. Francis J. Barry, age, 96, of Cherry Township, PA passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2015
Francis was born in Dushore on August 1, 1919 a son of the late William P. & Martha G. Connor Barry, and lived most of his life in Sullivan County.
A WW II veteran, he enlisted in the Army in 1941 and after basic training in Mississippi, went to England where he was a member of the 190th Field Artillery.
He was among those in the second day of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. He continued his service in Europe in the campaigns of Battle of the Bulge, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes until the war ended. He joined the Reserves and was activated to serve in the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952. By the time of his discharge, he had attained the rank of Sergeant.
He married the former Sophia Bahr of Dushore on November 27, 1954. They would have celebrated 61 years of marriage this year.
Francis worked on the family farm, did some construction work, mined coal in the strip mines and retired from PennDOT in 1984 after over 22 years.
After his retirement he enjoyed fishing with his buddies and visiting the local coffee shops. He loved animals, especially his Springer Spaniels. Although he’d tell you “Any dog is a good dog.” He loved helping other people and was almost a local fixit shop for his family and friends. He was an excellent welder.
Francis was an active member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church in Dushore, PA and a member of Loyalsock Post #996 American Legion, Dushore, PA. He was very involved with his community as a member of the Dushore Ambulance Association where he was driver for many years.
Over the years, there was rarely a Memorial Day Parade or Veteran’s funeral that he didn’t attend. He attended the yearly reunions of his Field Artillery until they stopped having them. More recently he has visited with Kelly Rhine of Milton, Pa. They are two of the three living members. He was very proud of the service to his country.
