Jakubowski Sowden, age 89, formerly of Wilmot Township, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at Country Meadows, Allentown, PA, with her loving family at her side. Irene was born June 24, 1925 in Hanover Green, PA a daughter of the late Stanley Jakubowski & Jennie Obidzinski Jakubowski. She graduated from High School in Hanover Green, PA and married Albert James Sowden Jr. of Philadelphia, PA on May 29, 1948. She met Al at a dance while she was attending the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing. They moved to Wilmot Township in 1970 and made their home on Stonehedge Farm. Al predeceased her on March 16, 2008 after 59 years of marriage and a daughter Patricia Sowden predeceased her in July 1979. After graduation from nursing school, Irene was on the faculty of Temple University School of Nursing until she resigned to start a family. Irene returned to work at Abington Memorial Hospital and Lower Bucks County hospital and finished her nursing career at The Wyalusing Valley High School as the school nurse for 16 years retiring in 1992. Irene obtained her Bachelor’s degree from Mansfield State College and her Master’s Degree from Marywood College. Irene was a very active member of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Wyalusing, PA. She was also very active with many civic organizations in the Wyalusing area and would help out at Christmas time portraying Mrs. Claus with her husband Al, portraying Santa Claus at many events over past years. In past years she volunteered with the American Red Cross, helping out at Bloodmobiles. She was also a former member of the Eagles Mere Country Club. Sowden Stroudsburg, PA Sister: Helen Reh Wilkes-Barre, PA Grandchildren: James Sowden Fort Worth, TX Janel Sowden Sacramento, CA Sister-in-law: Mrs. Ann Scire Orlando, FL Four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery, Dushore, PA. Friends and family may call at St. Basil’s on Friday, August 22, 2014 from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the Mass.
