OBITUARY
December 12, 2013
Charles Rubel of Eagles Mere, PA passed away on December 12, 2013 at the Geno J. Merli VA home in Scranton, PA.
Charlie was born on April 21, 1921, in Washington D.C., a son of the late Charles Sr. and Lottie L. Rubel. He grew up in DC and from an early age, spent the summer months in Eagles Mere, first at the Lakeside hotel or the Forest Inn and later in summer cottages.
Charlie earned his BA in Economics from Princeton and later his MA from the Johns Hopkins School of International Relations in DC.
He was a veteran of World War II, training with the Navy. He later joined the American Field Service and served in Burma.
On his way back to the US he met his future wife, Mary, in England. They were married in DC in 1946.
He worked with the VA and the Commerce Department, and then he transferred to the Foreign Service sector of the US State Department.
Accompanied by Mary and his children, he became a training officer in Pakistan and moved to Karachi in 1955. Tours in Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia and Chile followed. He retired from USAID in 1975 and took up residence in Hawaii, where he spent a number of years teaching Economics and Management, mostly to members of the Armed Services, through Hawaii Pacific College.
He finally returned home to Eagles Mere where he worked with the beginning of the Eagles Mere Friends of the Arts, of which he was one of the first presidents; the Lions Club and projects of the Borough Council.
Surviving Charlie is his wife of 67 years, Mary, five children, 16 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
Friends may call on Saturday, December 14, 2013 from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA, 18614.
