John J. Murray, age 71, of Clarks Summit, passed away on Monday, August 29, 2011 at the Community Medical Center in Scranton, PA.
John was born in Scranton, on July 6, 1940 a son of the late John P. & Dorothy Hoover Murray. He grew up in Sullivan County and graduated from the Turnpike High School in Mildred, a member of the class of 1958. After high school, John worked construction until he was drafted into the service. He served in the US Army from 1963-1965 in Thule, Greenland and the Reserves until 1969. John married the former Sharon Jones of Towanda, PA on July 29, 1967. John retired from GTE Sylvania in Towanda after 27 years of serving as a technician and supervisor.
John was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Clarks Summit and a former member of St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA. He was a very active member of McDermott Post #452 American Legion, Mildred, PA where he held the positions of Commander, Adjutant, and Financial Officer. He was also a member of the 40 & 8; member of PBOE Lodge 2191, Towanda, Monroeton Rod and Gun Club, and a very active member of the White Ash Land Association.
John enjoyed being with his family and spending time outdoors. He taught his grandchildren how to fish, hunt, and appreciate nature. He was an avid sports fan and thoroughly enjoyed watching his three grandsons play sports and was looking forward to watching the boys in the upcoming football season. He enjoyed spending time and sharing stories of his life and the times with his granddaughter, while touring around Sullivan County.

And numerous nieces and nephews.
A Transferal Service will be held on Friday, September 2 at 8:30 A.M. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 A.M. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mildred, PA with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery.
Friends may call on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. and from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M.
Graveside Military Services will be accorded by members of McDermott Post #452 American Legion, Mildred, PA. Members are asked to assemble and pass in review at 7:00 P.M on Thursday evening at the funeral home.
The family will provide the flowers and request that memorial contributions be directed to VNA Hospice, 301 Delaware Avenue, Olyphant, PA 18447.
