On August 27, 2011, after a long battle with cancer, Berkeley Penn Hastings, age 77 passed away at the Highlands Care center near the summer cottage in Eagles Mere that he loved. He was surrounded by his family.
Born on January 10, 1934 in Milton, PA to Berkeley Virginius Hastings and Frances Steel Hastings. He was preceded in death by three sisters, twins Marjorie Baker and Virginia Gaines, and sister Dorothy Mulvey, as well as a very special aunt Ellen Steel Rumpf with whom he travelled and cared for in her later years. Berk grew up at
“Robinwood” on Broadway, and was very pleased that it would soon serve as the site of the Milton Public Library.
He is survived by his wife of 48 ½ years, the former Dale Burkholder, his daughters Wendy Hastings (Yefri Lobo) of Eagles Mere, and Robin Sheedy (Ned) of Dumfries, VA. He is also survived by two grandchildren whom he adored, Caitlin Sheedy and John Berkeley (JB) Sheedy, and his mother-in-law Dorothy Burkholder of Chambersburg, PA.
A seasonal resident of Eagles Mere, he enjoyed the fellowship of the Eagles Mere Presbyterian Church where he served on the board, spending time with his friends and family at his beloved Rusticana Cottage. He had previously served as a trustee of the Wallingford Presbyterian Church.
He graduated Milton primary schools, and McDonough School in Maryland. He graduated from Temple University and received an additional Associates Degree in Electronics from Mitchell College. He was honorably discharged after serving in the US Army in Germany. After marrying, he moved to Wallingford, PA where he resided for 40 years and raised his family. He and Dale retired to the Penn National Golf Course Community in Fayetteville, PA in 2004.
