Bernard Litzelman, age 91, well known resident of Dushore, PA passed away on Friday, August 19, 2011 at the Highlands Care Center in Laporte, PA with his loving family at his side. Bernie was born in Williamsport on November 24, 1919 a son of the late Charles M. & Clara Adelia Tilman Litzelman. He attended St. Boniface Grade School and St. Mary’s High School. He spent his early years with his aunt in Sonestown and summers on his uncle’s farm in Sullivan County. Bernie served in WW II in the Army. As a combat infantryman he was wounded in Europe where he received a purple heart and a bronze star. After the war he returned to Sullivan County where he married the former Mary A. Lynch of Dushore on September 14, 1946. He and Mary began operating her father Vincent Lynch’s luncheonette which they renamed Litzelman’s. It was located at the red light in Dushore. They operated their store until about 1966 when Bernie began working as a clerk in the Dushore Post Office, from which he retired in 1981. Mary and Bernie and Joe and Ann also operated the concession stand at the World End State Park for several years. In retirement Bernie was very active and worked part time for Fitzpatrick and Lambert dealership and for Homer Funeral Home. Bernie was an active member of St. Basil’s Church, a former member of the Holy Name Society and was a 4th Degree member of St. John Neumann Council K of C, Dushore, PA and the Dushore Fire Company. A he was a very active member of Loyalsock Post 996 American Legion where he was past commander and especially enjoyed helping with the Easter egg hunt. He and Mary both volunteered at the PA Bowhunter’s Festival since it began over 50 years ago. Surviving: Spouse: Mary at home Son and daughter-in-law: Joseph & Denise Litzelman Matthews, NC Daughter: Ann Litzelman Harrisburg, PA Sister-in-law: Mildred Litzelman Harrisburg, PA Three grandchildren: Scott & Christine Ng Litzelman, Marie Litzelman and Jennifer Litzelman. Bernie was predeceased by a twin sister Bernadine Litzelman on October 24, 1997 and brothers Steve Litzelman, Vincent Litzelman and Charles Litzelman. A Transferal Service will be held at 9:30 A.M. on Tuesday, August 23 2011 from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA 18614 and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday, Aug. 22, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Graveside Military Services will be accorded by members of Loyalsock Post #996 American Legion, Dushore, PA. Members are asked to assemble and pass in review at the funeral home on Monday evening at 7:00 P.M. The family will provide the flowers and ask that memorial contributions be directed to the Sullivan County Library, PO Box 309, Dushore, PA 18614.
