Strong Jackson, age 100, a well known long time resident of Wyalusing has gone to meet her maker on May 31, 2011. She passed away peacefully at the Towanda Personal Care Home, Towanda, PA. Shirley was born on February 28, 1911, being the fourth daughter of the former John and Sadie Rogers Strong. She graduated from Wyalusing High School and remembered walking to and from Norway Ridge to attend school until her teenage years when the family moved to the Welles farm in Wyalusing. After graduation, she married Wardell J. Jackson and they lived on and operated a farm on Lime Hill in Wyalusing Township. In the 1950’s, they sold and left the farm when they entered into a partnership with the late Theodore Burgess and Marjorie Burgess (Wardell’s sister). The Farm and Home Supply business was formed by that partnership and was a well known business for years in the community. Shirley retired in the 1970’s. She enjoyed her family, loved to garden, and to hunt and fish, hunting until the age of 85 and fishing well into her 90’s. Some stories of her hunting experiences appeared in the Pennsylvania Game News and the Rocket Courier. She enjoyed refurbishing furniture, caning chairs, and braiding rugs. She was very active and a Past Worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also very active as a member of the Wyalusing Methodist Church and often helped the Methodist women with dinners and other events. After a stroke at the age of 85 and a relatively successful recovery, she spent many hours in her Church St. home and her Homets Ferry property. She occupied much of her time by making quilts for the many members of her family. She wintered in Florida until the age of 95 and was active in community events there. She is survived by two sons and their wives; Richard and Dolores Jackson of Mansfield, PA and James and Betty Jackson of Villages in Florida, FL, one daughter and her husband, Theodore and Betty Jackson Them, of Wyalusing, PA, 15 Grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Jackson, her daughter and husband, Roscoe and Charlotte Jackson Hall, of Panama City, FL, four sisters, Nellie Strong, Ruth Strong Franklin, Alice Strong Walker, Veda Strong Houck, three brothers, Ivan Strong, James Strong, and Paul Strong.
