Green, age 99, of Dushore, well known former basketball coach of Dushore High School, St. Basil’s High School and Turnpike High School, passed on Saturday morning, April 9, 2011 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA. Don was born in North Waterford, ME on May 15, 1911 son of the late Irving T. & Florence Brown Green. After graduating high school he entered the University of Maine where he graduated with a degree in teaching. While at the university he was very active in sports and was undefeated in cross country skiing. He was a runner up for the 1932 Winter Olympics Cross Country Skiing Team, which was held in Lake Placid, NY. Don accepted a position at the Dushore High School teaching Biology and Vocational AG and after Dushore closed taught at the Sonestown High School. He taught in the mornings at Dushore and the afternoons at Sonestown. He also taught Shop at Turnpike High School and at St. Basil’s. After his teaching career he became the Director of the Sullivan County Child Welfare Department and later was the head of the Sullivan County Probation Department. When Don came to town he met and married the former G. Rita Muller of Dushore. They were married at St. Basil’s on October 4, 1938 and they recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. During his teaching career he also found time to be the head Basket Ball Coach for the Dushore High School and later Turnpike High School in Mildred and also St. Basil’s High School. He and teacher John Shelman alternated coaching jobs at St. Basil’s and Turnpike High Schools. Don was also a very active member of St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, and the Holy Name Society. He was the last living Charter Member (1943) of the Dushore Lions Club and was very active with the club’s many community activities. He also served on the Sullivan County Assistance Board. Surviving: Spouse Rita at home Three sons and daughters-in-law: Raymond J. & Terry Lee Green Towanda, PA Robert D. & JoAnn Green Dushore, PA Richard M. & Cindy Jo Green Dushore, PA Daughter and son-in-law: Katrina M. & Richard D. Gardner Forksville, PA Fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great grand-children and one great great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Ronald Green of Athens in 1994 and a sister Dorothy Lovejoy of North Waterford, ME. A Transferal Service will be held at 9:30 A.M. on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery, Dushore, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
