JOSEPH C. WILKINSON, JR
1920-2011
Joseph C. Wilkinson, Jr. 90 of Philadelphia PA and a seasonal resident of Eagles Mere PA, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2011. He was born in 1920, the only child of Joseph and Elsie Wilkinson of Philadelphia. He was predeceased by his wife Nancy Stone Wilkinson, also of Philadelphia PA. They resided and raised their children in center city Philadelphia in a unique urban home that he designed. Summers were spent with the family in Eagles Mere.
He served in the Army intelligence office during World War II in Washington D.C. After the war, he rejoined his father in the family business, Wilkinson Associates, Inc., a design and consulting firm serving the banking industry. The firm specialized in providing independent banks with management advice, bank design and equipment needs, including the construction of the marble teller counters prevalent in bank interiors for many years. During the depression, the firm of Wilkinson Associates, Inc., kept three shifts of workers busy for three years cutting the marble that still adorns the walls of the 30th Street Train Station in Philadelphia. Additionally, he was the founder and president of the Eastern Financial Times, a regional industry trade publication for the banking industry. In the early 1970’s, he became associated with the Endless Mountains Development Company, developers and restorers of old time Eagles Mere. As President of the Endless Mountains Land Development Company, he was instrumental in establishing the events on the Village green. He was also responsible for the installation of the Victorian street clock and the gazebo on the green, both of which are well known Eagles Mere landmarks today.
Joe will be remembered by many for his kindness, generosity, dedication to his business interests, and love for his family and friends, especially his beloved wife Nancy.
He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Dr. Lynn Wilkinson and Dr. James Heym of East Haddam CT, his son and daughter in law, Joseph C. Wilkinson, III (Jay) and Laurie Geise Wilkinson of Eagles Mere PA, and a grandson Ayden Stone Wilkinson.
There will be a memorial service Saturday January 29 at 1:30 at his retirement community, Meadowood, in Worcester PA, and an additional service is planned for the springtime in Eagles Mere PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed nationally to the Rails to Trails Conservancy, The Duke Ellington Building, 2121Ward Ct, NW 5thFloor, Washington, DC 20037 or locally to the Eagles Mere Museum, PO Box 440, Eagles Mere, PA 17731.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA 18614.
